Book: Aru Shah and the End of Time
Author: Roshani Chokshi
Publisher: Scholastic
ISBN: 9781407185798
Rating: A+

Twelve-year-old Aru Shah has a tendency to stretch the truth in order to fit in at school. Whilst her classmates are jetting off to exotic locales, she'll be at home, in the Museum of Ancient Indian Art and Culture where her mother works. Is it any wonder that Aru makes up stories about being royalty, travelling to Paris, and having a chauffeur? When Aru's schoolmates dare her to prove that the museum's Lamp of Bharata is cursed, she doesn't think there's any harm in lighting it. Little does Aru know that lighting the lamp has dire consequences. She unwittingly frees the Sleeper, an ancient demon whose duty it is to awaken the God of Destruction. Her classmates and beloved mother are frozen in time, and, accompanied by a wise-cracking pigeon and her long-lost half-sister, it's up to Aru to save them.

So let me start up by telling you that this was great – I went into this with high expectations and Aru 100% met them. This was one of my most anticipated reads this year, for a number of reasons, and let me tell you, this did not disappoint. It was everything I wanted it to be and more – but beyond being exactly wanted, I’m confident in saying that this book is something that anyone will enjoy and fall in love with, irrespective of their age.

I want to start off by talking about what this means to me, and why it’s so important in terms of representation. It’s not something I usually talk about, as actually, whilst I am a PoC, I don’t actually have any issues with current representations – but this book was a big beautiful bonus for me. Why may you ask? Brown. Hindu. Representation. And the reason this resonated with me, is because yes I’m now an adult, but this is the first time I’ve seen myself in a YA or MG books. For years, I’ve been seeing white people, black people, even Muslims represented – but Hindu’s or ‘Indians’ have proved scarce. So for me, this was the book I always wanted a child – a book that was relatable to me, that had my people, that explored the myths and stories I was told as a child.

Now let’s talk about the story. First up is word building, because honestly an MG fantasy novel is nothing without good world building, and Chokshi’s is bloody beautiful. It’s definitely on par with, actually maybe better than that of Riordan’s. She’s crafted this absolutely wonderfully fantastic world, filled with glorious Hindu mythology and magic, and littered with Indian Easter eggs, that Indians will be able to pick and go ‘ah, I know that.’ It’s an effortlessly beautiful world, in that is so easy to fall into and so easy to never want to leave, engulfed by wonderful creatures, crazy demons, and one girls quest to stop it all.

Which naturally brings me onto the mythology. For me it was a step back in time, to the days of my childhood and the stories I read as child – but for so many others this will be the first time they ever get to experience the glory, richness and magic of Hindu mythology and folklore – and Chokshi has done an expert job of weaving this into the story and the world she’s built. For years I’ve been wishing someone would take the expansive and limitless mythology of Hinduism and weave it into a novel, and Chokshi has given me exactly what I wanted. A world that now feels like home; a world I can’t wait to get back to.

As for the plot, it moves well. A very good pacing, especially for the audience. It’s fast and actions packed, definitely more than enough to keep one engaged and turning the pages deep into midnight. Also, it pairs the right level of complexity to keep you guessing and engaged in trying to figure out what’s happening next, whilst still be right for the age range. Additionally it, it has all a good balance of heavy and light moments, sprinkled with an instantly loveable humour to cool off the darkness of impending dooms and dangerous demons.

As for characters – well I’ve made some new friends, and I’d certainly like to give them a visit again in a years time when the return to grace the pages of Book 2. Chokshi has created a group of relatable, funny, smart and well-fleshed out characters, that no one can avoid falling in love with, even if they tried. Naturally, Aru is the golden glory of this books, and rightly so. So much of younger me I saw in her and she’s is going to be so relatable for younger brown children; smart, kind of popular but not, kind of fits in but not really, and obsessed with these Indian talks of mythology and magic that none of her classmates really know about, which inevitably leads to the propensity for little lies and wealth’s of storytelling. Aru was me as a child and, as I’ve said, will be so many other brown kids, so not only was the a extremely pleasant character to read and follow, but she’s also going to be a confidant and companion for millions of younger kids, of all creed and colour, around the world.
As for other characters, can we just talk about Boo – because no hero is anything without their sidekick and Boo, was boo-tiful. Funny, witty, almost a guardian to guide Aru, he embodies that guiding voice that every child needs, but in a way that sounds friendly and in a way that they want it. He flies through the journey with you and Aru, teaching both the reader and Aru, allowing both to grow and evolve together. I’d say Boo propels this story just as much as Aru does.
So there’s definitely a group of really wonderful, relatable and fleshed out characters here.

And finally the writing. I don’t think anyone had any doubts about this – Chokshi is known for her whimsical and poetic writing, that feels like crushed Indian silk – and Aru Shah was no exception. Albeit, a level simpler due to the younger audience, it still retained what makes a Chokshi book inconicly Chokshi and thus beautiful. In turn, this made the world building and characters what they were – her mastery of world cemented the beauty in the world, the conviction in the mythology and the personability and development in the characters. Not a sentence went by when I didn’t want to tab and add to my mental list of beautiful prose to put in my mental museum of literary art. Ultimately the writing was stellar and made for a very whimsical and beautiful tale – perfect for what it was trying to do here.

So overall, as you may have gathered, I’m a little more than in love with Aru Shah and the End of Time, and I have no doubt that you will be too. It really is beautiful, rich, dreamy and magical. Aru Shah is like a woman of whimsy, poetry and magic wrapped in a saree of silk and gold. A must read.
Laila Levenson has always been the baby of the family, but now with her older siblings, Mira and Krish, leaving home just as she starts secondary school, everything feels like it's changing... can the reappearance of Nana Josie's Protest Book and the spirit it releases in Laila, her friends and her local community, help her find her own voice and discover what she truly believes in?A powerful chime rings through Laila's mind, guiding her to walk the footsteps of the past on her way to discover her own future.

Sita Brahmachari, for me, is one of those authors where I've been meaning to pick up one her books forever, and it's just never happened. So when Tender Earth popped into my inbox, I decided that this was it. I was finally going to read a Brahmachari book - and I can honestly say I'm so glad I did. I went into this book having just finished a fairly heavy-going high-ish fantasy and this was the perfect antidote to that. Strong, powerful, emotional and moving, this book was grounded in the real world and is the ideal contemporary to move onto. It managed to be an impactful and emotional novel, whilst still staying light and not becoming too heavy.

First, before we even talk about the premise and plot, can we just talk about how freaking gorgeous the writing was in this. It was an absolute pleasure to read, and exactly what a novel like this one needs. Brahmachari is so masterful in the way she uses words, the perfect amount of whimsy and tenderness to build the world and story beautifully, whilst both conveying and evoking emotions in the most stunning way. The lucidness and smoothness of the writing just allows the story flow gently, passing through you, investing you in the novel. I think what really struck me about the writing, though, was the way it managed to make me feel - with a novel like Tender Earth, I think a massive part of the story working well, is the writing being able to evoke the correct emotion from the reader, and do that well. Brahmachari does this beautifully, in such a way that you just have to keep reading, and in a way that really allows you to empathise with the characters.

As for the story, it left me speechless. Very few books give me a book hangover, but this one did - for a full 24 hours after finishing Tender Earth, I could not pick up another book, nor could I stop thinking about this one. It follows Laila, as her world seemingly falls apart, the journey leading her to this whole new self-discovery and world-discovery. We follow her as she learns about and experiences the real world, and watch as how these experiences begin to define her and a make a 'new' Laila. It's almost kind of a coming of age story, and it was a journey that I loved following. I think there were two things that really stood out for me. The first was that these books explore an age in everyone's life that generally isn't spoken about much, and explores it in a very unique and real way. Like I just said, it's kind of a coming of age story, in the sense that we actually have two. Yes we have that point when we enter adulthood and experience the world of work and bills, but as children we also have this coming of age when we move from primary to secondary school, when our friends and worlds are changing, when we begin to grow up and experience new emotions, both our minds and bodies changing. Brahmachari manages to explore this so beautifully, in a way that I think a lot of people will connect with.
The second thing that stood out about this story is its relevance. It touches upon some really important issues that surround us today, such as refugees, animal cruelty, having a voice and exercising this voice. Again, Brahmachari does this artfully, not shoving in your face, but instead gently weaving into the story as a part of Laila's life, as is the case with so many children nowadays. With the internet and an information / connected society, the step from childhood to teenagehood has changed massively, and Brahmachari does a stunning job of exploring this, and the effects it can have on those children.

The characters in this were perfection, also. Laila is an instantly loveable character who you couldn't help but care for in the most parental way. You felt everything she felt and just wanted her to be happy, and for everything to work out. Again, this falls back onto Brahmachari's writing, which allowed me to connect with Laila so well, and really feel as if I knew her. The way Laila was crafted, from the ground up, and with so much depth, meant that we really got to know her and in turn made her an incredibly evocative character. What was brilliant, though, was that we got to see Laila grow and become this new person. Brahmachari did this expertly, allowing us to really understand Laila and her emotions, as she transitioned through this point in her life, the whole book moving from an almost melancholic tone to a much happier and spirited one. I think with a book like this, so much depends on the character, and Brahmachari absolutely nailed it with Laila, and all the people Brahmachari chose to have surround her. The characterisation was expertly done here.

Overall, Brahmachari has crafted a wonderful and whimsy coming of age tale, that will make you feel so many things, but ultimately leave with a warm fuzzy feeling. If you need a light, yet evocative novel, Tender Earth is definitely one to check out. I am so glad I finally managed to pick up one of Brahmachari's novels, and will most deftineily be going back to read her previous ones. This really is a book to treasure.
Book: Nemesis

It’s been happening since Min was eight. Every two years, on her birthday, a strange man finds her and murders her in cold blood. But hours later, she wakes up in a clearing just outside her tiny Idaho hometown—alone, unhurt, and with all evidence of the horrifying crime erased.Across the valley, Noah just wants to be like everyone else. But he’s not. Nightmares of murder and death plague him, though he does his best to hide the signs. But when the world around him begins to spiral toward panic and destruction, Noah discovers that people have been lying to him his whole life. Everything changes in an eye blink. For the planet has a bigger problem. The Anvil, an enormous asteroid threatening all life on Earth, leaves little room for two troubled teens. Yet on her sixteenth birthday, as she cowers in her bedroom, hoping not to die for the fifth time, Min has had enough. She vows to discover what is happening in Fire Lake and uncovers a lifetime of lies: a vast conspiracy involving the sixty-four students of her sophomore class, one that may be even more sinister than the murders.

Well damn. This book blew me away. It was so incredibly good, and even now I can't stop thinking about it. Before we even get started, let me tell you, this book doesn't just take you for a fun ride. It takes you on a freaking rollercoaster.

Let's start with the premise and story. There's been a lot of buzz about this novel and trust me when I say it's for good reason. This book draws you in before you even begin reading. Just the blurb had me hooked, and the story itself completely lived up to my expectations, satisfying me and giving me everything I wanted. The novel is a mystery thriller and follows Min, who keeps getting murdered - over and over again. I don't want to give away too much because it really is one of those novels where the less you know = the better, but it follows Min and Noah trying to figure out why this happens to her and getting to the bottom of Project Nemesis. I'll say no more - go and read it to find out what happens.
As a thriller, this book really is thrilling. The story is very cleverly crafted, secrets, mystery and questions all woven together expertly. It really creates the perfect combination to keep you both hooked and on the edge of your seat, or in my case the edge of my bed. I rarely find a book that wills me to forgo my sleep to finish it, yet Nemesis did just that. Reichs has spun a story that kept me utterly thrilled and turning pages, through the night, unable to set this book down. That's when you know a story is well done.

The writing also made this story perfect. A massive part of thrillers is showing and not telling, but also knowing how much (or little) to show. Reich's nailed this. The writing was exectued so masterfully. The prose created solid and rich descriptions that really pulled me into the world and made me feel like a part of the story. This, for me, is a must in experiencing a novel and staying hooked, and Reich's managed to capture me entirely. I also felt the balance of dialogue with description was on point. The right balance meant I never felt bored and the book never became too slow, the writing allowing for a really good pace. For Nemesis this translated into a fast pace, but that's exactly what I needed and wanted, with this being a thriller. Having plenty of questions and secrets being thrown at you, the book needs to be able to keep up with your desire for answers, and Nemsis does that very well.

I think something that really worked for me in this novel is that the thrill factor was held as paramount. Yes, there were emotional scenes and yes there was a touch of romance, but Reichs made the correct decsion to keep this mininmal and focus on the mystery aspect, which I felt really propelled the story forwards and kept me engaged. The romance was kept minor and the suspense kept a max, making the focus and purpose of the story clear and effective. The book was able to thrill fully, and thrill it defitniely did.

Charcaters I kind of have mixed feeling on, but ultimately I think it works. Noah was where it kind of started to go a little astray for me. It's kind of weird in the sense that I can see a lot of similarities between both Noah and Min's personalities and voices, yet at the same time I can also define key differences, and I found myself prefering Min. For me I found Noah just a little too angsty - a little too willing to contribute an endless string of complaining, sometimes coming out with stuff that doesn't really add much to the story. However, Min managed to save this, in her logic and practicality. She's the character you're looking for a in a thriller; practical and quick thinking, she helps to move the story along quickly, and efficiently raise the questions needed to develop the mystery and genereate the thrill. I also felt I was able to really connect with Min, which helped to me have a genuine interest in following her and trying to figure out what was going on with her deaths and project Nemesis. All of the characters were well buillt and given enough depth for me to care about them, but Min, being the main character, had the most to her and I really did feel invested in her journey.

The atmosphere, overall, really worked for me also, having the right amount of edge and darkness, whilst still maintaing itself as something that is not 'adult'. Writing a thriller is something that requires all aspects to be on point; investable characters, a quick story, expert writing, showing not telling etc. Reichs absoultely nails it, prodcuing an enaging and fast paced rollercaster that will have you on the edge of your seat. The layers of the story peel away one by one and will keep yout turning the pages well into the night.
As for the ending, it struck just the right balance. It satisifed me in asnwering what I wanted to know - I didn't feel like I had wasted anything in reading the book. I'd got what I wanted from the ending, but also more. It's set up perfectly for the next installment and has left just enough of a cliffhanger to make me hungry to read it.

Overall Reichs has created an asbsolute rollercoaster of a novel that is both suspenseful and riveting. In all seriousness, you won't be able to put this down. Already, this is one of my favoruite novels of the year and I encourage to pick this up and give it a go. I promse you won't regret it.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6352350956849097927.post-29321320148367123662017-07-05T20:33:00.000+01:002017-07-05T20:33:30.270+01:00City of Saints and Thieves - Natalie Anderson - Review

This was one of the reads that I was most anticipating this year, for a number of reasons, and let me start by telling you that it did not disappoint.

Let's begin with the premise; it's definitely not something usually read, and yet it was what made it so different that made me so interested in it. It's a mystery, filled with gang fare and secrets, but minus any of the typical paranormalcy that usually accompanies those things in YA. Instead, it manages to translate these themes into a riveting and fast-paced novel that grounds itself in the real world. Another part of what intrigued me with this novel was the fact that it was set in modern day Africa. It's both a setting and culture that we rarely see in YA books, and that, for me, was enough to make we want to read it - and again, it didn't disappoint. Anderson gives us this beautiful and descriptive insight into modern Africa, what it is like, and helps us to understand just how different the lives of those living there are to ours. The way she crafted the African setting was both rich and vivid, so much so that I really felt like I was there.

I think part of what made this world so real, and really made me appreciate the life I have and how different it is in England, is how brutally honest this book is. It touched upon dark themes, which are ones that need to be spoken about. It highlights the prevalence of rape and torture in African society, but tackles them artfully, weaving them into the story in a way that isn't too aggressive or 'too much.' I think part of this was what made me love the story even more - because there really was no sugar coating to make it 'teen-friendly' or PC. It was brutal and real, which for me is a winner. This book makes you feel something, and if a book makes you feel something you know it's doing something right.

This, in turn, meant that the story flowed beautifully. Supported by Anderson's masterful writing, the story managed to give me just enough information to keep me interested, but at the same, keep enough secrets to keep me reading. Honestly, I found it hard to put this one down. Anderson's prose was absolutely stunning, and the dedication that has gone into crafting this plot is apparent. She's crafted this absolutely wonderful mystery, with so many different layers; each answer gives you more questions and makes you totally unable to put this novel down.

Following Tina was something I also really enjoyed, as I felt she was a strong and likeable protagonist. She's been crafted in such a way that you really connect with her and understand her emotions, as well as fully understanding, and supporting, the decisions she takes. I also felt like Anderson succeeded in manifesting a really fleshed out and grounded character; there was no vapidity and I definitely felt like I knew Tina enough to be fully invested in her story. This, in turn, makes the novel so much more lifelike, in the sense that I really was pulled in. The others characters, such as Kiki, Boyboy and Michael, all added so well to the novel, making it absolutely perfect. Most characters complemented each other in all the right ways, leading to a world of characters that I felt I both knew and wanted to follow.

Overall I can say that I really enjoyed this book and the journey it took me on. Yes, the journey was hard sometimes, in that it was a lot to handle emotionally and in terms of the acts that were happening, but at the same, the story was absolutely riveting. Filled with strong characters and deep secrets, City of Saints and Thieves will have you captured from the first page.

Congrats--you're an adult now!* Your first real job. The first plant you kept alive. The first relationship you kept alive (until further notice). This hand-lettered and illustrated guided journal is a charming and cheeky celebration of what it means to finally be a grown-up (sort of). From the first time you visited home without bringing dirty laundry to the first time you truly felt comfortable in your own skin, the small victories and meaningful milestones in this quirky and insightful journal make it a great gift and a fun experience for anyone winning at adulthood - the good, the bad and the OMG. *Ish

So for those of you who follow my blog may be aware, this book is a little different for. But nonetheless, when an email popped detailing the book I decided that I needed to review a copy - because it sounded like a Wreck this Journal (which I love) meets becoming and adult - and being in my first year of uni and having to live by myself these past 6 months, this felt like it would be witty, hilarious and oh-so-relatable.

As it turns it, it was, and it was so much more. Let's talk a little bit about the premise of this book first. The book is a mix of both thinking and doing, in the sense that each page presents a new 'adult-ish' thought to you, that usually ends with you either thinking about a particular scenario that makes you realise you are no where near being an adult yet, or ends with you picking up a pen and being creative on the page - and I really love books like this. I think they are so much fun, and also act as a sort of journalistic time capsule - which is exactly what this book is.

The whole purpose of the book becomes clearer as you do more and more of it. It's a fun and witty way to document your journey into adult hood, and I'm so grateful that Vanko had the genius to come up with this. I am certain that in twenty years I will look back on this little gem and either laugh or cry at how clueless and young I am right now.

The prompts on all the pages are witty, funny and relatable in the sense that they pick up on both the little quirks of being young and the stereotypes of being an adult, that everyone seems to accidentally fall into. Some pages question the way you handle oreos, whilst another asks you to draw the first houseplant you bought - a subconscious stereotype of being adult that I've already given into. My university flat has multiple houseplants now. Of course some of the pages I simply can't answer yet - like my first set of wheels or looking back on my social media platforms - but I think that's what's so great about this little book. It's going capture my whole journey into adult-hood, both now and through the next few years and into the future - a whole period of my life that realistically would have gone undocumented and forgotten, other than the carefully curated images that would have made it to me instagram.

I also love the art in this book; Vanko's almost candid doodles are both charming and tumblr-esque in their nature and will definitely appeal to late nineties children (like myself) and millennials. It really acts as the finishing touch, the almost marker like drawings really giving it the journalistic feel, that makes you all that more likely to pour your embarrassing escapades into adult-hood down onto the pages.

I think overall, this book is just bucket loads of fun. It has a great voice, talking to you in a way that feels both relatable and satirical, laughing with you at the quirks of being an adult into the 21st century; growing out of teenage slang, falling into the adult-ish stereotypes and keeping you engaged the whole way through. Adult-Ish is quirky, funny, beautifully put together and something I think that I will be able to look back at in twenty years that'll remind that being adult can also be fun.

Now if you've made it this far, I also have kindly been given some pages from the book, by the publisher, that I'm allowed to share with you - so you can see for yourself how fantastic this book is and why you need to have it in your life so much. It's been a long time - a very long time, to the point that I no longer even receive books for review. But nonetheless, I'm finally at a point in my life (now at uni) where I feel I am on top of things enough to try and do this again. And hopefully stay active this time, so fingers crossed.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I figured I'd kick it off with a Top Ten Tuesday, which is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish - you should got an check out their page if you'd like to do this also. This weeks theme is books Read in One Sitting. Now honestly I haven't got many books for this, because simply, my lifestyle doesn't allow me a large chunk of time to si<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">t and do nothing but read - but thankfully this was clarified as to include ten of the shortest books I've read, top ten books I read in one sitting, ten books to read when you are short on time, top ten books that will make you read the whole day away, etc.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Tragedy Paper - Elizabeth Laban
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I'll be honest - I can't remember too much of reading this one. All I can is that it was a gloomy, miserable day and that I sat down in the morning with this book and that by the evening I was done. And I was so satisfied. The book painted this whole new world or mystery and university (I think?!) and it was so atmospheric that it just drew you in. I just got so lost in this book and could not put it down.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Need I say more? The whole serious is Un-put-downable and will keep you engrossed and reading both all day and all night. I've chosen book 1 for this list as it's the shortest and the most realistic option to finish in one day, but let's be honest, we all finished Deathly Hallows the day it came out. I'm not going to say too much because 1. this is a no brainer and 2. there is too much for me to say about why i love this series and that's a blog post for another day.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The Girl on the Train - Paula Hawkins
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is not the shortest book, I'll admit. But riveting, it is. So much hype had been heard around this and thus I put it off for a long time, but one day on a long train ride to London I decided to pick it up - and boy am I glad I did. This book is so filled with suspense, mystery and thrill, that you speed through it so quick and it barely feels a fraction of it's size. It's over before you know it. I finished it in two days of broken reading, so I think you can finish this in a day and it would definitely make you read the whole day away.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This would be a challenge to finish in a day. Honestly this book is huge, but read your day away you will, with this one. I chose book 2 because book 1 simply didn't have the same effect in me, but this book, the characters, the magic and the world building will captivate you. Such intricate plot filled with everything you could want: drama, magic, mystery, romance and deceit - it's really just a beautiful magical book and you'll be reading from dawn till dusk.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Dorothy must Die - Danielle Paige
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is an incredible books - part of what makes you read the day away with this is that for many the wizard of oz is a classic, a book or film which we consumed countless times as a child. Paige builds and expands on this classic, weaving in a new a fantastic plot, filled with magic, mystery and a new take on people that we already know - which is part of what I think makes this so captivating.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">A Monster Calls - Patrick Ness
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">There's been a lot of hype around this one recently, and it's definitely worth it. Easily this could be finished in once sitting, especially if you get the version with the beautiful illustrations. The story is short yet deep and very poignant. The writing is also incredible and the way it builds the story will draw you in and have you reading till you've finished this one. Personally, I didn't let myself finish it in one night because it was so beautiful and I didn't want it to end - so I spread it over two nights.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This one is small but feels long, in a good way. A somewhat new / retelling of a fairy tale, it feels as though there is so much crammed into this story. Filled with so much magic, morals and what feels reminiscent of a grimes and anderson fairy tales I found myself wondering who would read this and it really is everyone. Children, teens and adults, this is a beautiful timeless tale for all and perfect if you're looking for something to curl up with the in the midst of winter and get lost in a magical world.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This one I remember reading with my friends, in prep for halloween, and we all finished it in one night. Witty and page turning, whilst also having just the right amount of creep and almost a level of magical realism, what I really loved about this is it re-ignited the child in me. The story took me back to the like of harry potter and the narnia stories - I really wish I had been able to read this when I was a younger child. Definitely worth it, but I'd say make sure you read it at the right time of the year - it really will make a difference.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Again, this one is super short and one of the most charming books I have ever read. Again reminiscent of a children story for adults, it's magical, heart wrenching and (i'm starting to sound like a broken record) perfect for the winter. It's one that I read so long ago and keep meaning to come back to and maybe this winter I finally will.
Book: A court of mist and fury
Author: Sarah J Maas
Publisher: Bloomsbury Kids
ISBN: 9781408857892
Rating: A

Feyre survived Amarantha's clutches to return to the Spring Court – but at a steep cost. Though she now has the powers of the High Fae, her heart remains human, and it can't forget the terrible deeds she performed to save Tamlin's people.Nor has Feyre forgotten her bargain with Rhysand, High Lord of the feared Night Court. As Feyre navigates its dark web of politics, passion, and dazzling power, a greater evil looms – and she might be key to stopping it. But only if she can harness her harrowing gifts, heal her fractured soul, and decide how she wishes to shape her future – and the future of a world cleaved in two.

It has been a long time since I've loved a book as much this. A court of mist and fury is by far the best book that I have read in 2016 so far, and easy surpassed it's predecessor a court of thorn and roses.

The plot of this was so incredibly perfect - it was no secret that this was going to be based of the classic tale of hades and persephone but I was not expecting what this novel gave me - and in a good way. Whilst still retaining the classic elements of the grecian tale, it fused it with twists and turns that you were honestly not expecting. Maas mastered making you believe one thing whilst, in fact, the complete opposite was happening, thus making this a riveting read that I found I genuinely could't put down, even when my studies were calling to me. Furthermore getting to explore the Night Court was something I had been looking forwards to since I read book 1, and Maas did not disappoint, creating a rich and deep world which was all too easy to get lost in. Paired with her whimsical and descriptive writing, that seems ever improving with every novel, I found myself becoming one with the story and has made A court of mist and fury linger in my thoughts, even now after I have finished the novel.

As mentioned above Maas's writing improves with every novel that she writes, and a court of mist and fury was no exception to the trend. Part of what I loved about a court of thorns and roses was the rich and descriptive style, the way visuals, world and characters were built up around me and Maas took that to a new level with this book. Taking what could have been an incredibly dark landscape and episode of the series and pairing her descriptive prose with witty and 'banterous' dialogue, Maas succeeded in finding a balance that made the novel not too heavy, not too airy and all the more enjoyable.

In fact it was the world building in this novel, that I felt, really showed the excellence and skill of Maas. Using her immersive and detailed language she managed to construct a night court that both gave the atmosphere and visuals she intended whilst still allowing the reader to interpret the court in their own way, building on their prejudged image from book 1, thus making the night court more magical and real for themselves.

Character development... lets just say that Maas, in my eyes, is now the queen of character development. Having hinted at this at the end of book 1, she took everything we thought we knew and felt about these characters and turned it on their head. The people we loved, we now hate, a new perspective and situation exposing their aggressive and harsh qualities. The people we thought not trust Maas makes us understand and begin to love. She has such a way of weaving context and history of the characters into the enthralling storyline that you don't even notice the shift until Feyre is in a situation that you find yourself rooting for the once bad guy. Feyre, herself, was also someone who I enjoyed the character progression on. For someone who had struggled to accept the fae world and ended up with a major life change at the end of book 1, I felt Maas guided her to really come into her own in this book. She embraced who she was and channeled that into becoming a stronger and more independent characters who was all the more pleasant to read than the meek and reliant Feyre of a court of thorns and roses.

This book was an absolute gem. Maas has somehow managed to make this even better than the initial novel in the series and yet still leave me craving more. From page one I was clawed into the night court, gripped by Feyre and Rhysand's story and the tensions arising amounts the characters. A court of mist and fury really is as magical as it sounds and a book you will struggle to forget.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6352350956849097927.post-68859727829814630482015-03-30T21:37:00.000+01:002015-03-30T21:37:38.600+01:00Apologies and Explanations

Okay guys, we need to talk and by that I mean I have some apologies and explaining to do to you. So as you've more than obviously noticed I've been extremely inactive this year, even after promising I'd try to be more active. So now I'm going to explain why. By no means have I abandoned the blog nor do I want to. I seriously love this blog so much and connecting with you all and sharing my love for books and reading with you all. In fact it's really frustrating for me to be unable to devote the amount of time I'd like to to this blog. So to reader, authors and publishers, I'm insanely sorry for my lack of presence. Anyway apologies aside let me explain why it's been this way. Last September I started my first year of A levels and quite honestly I had no idea the amount of time they'd take up in my life and they did take up way loads of time. I found that not only did I have no time write blog posts but I had no time to read either, unless you count textbooks and revision guides. Anyway, the issue of time has only increased as the year has progressed, the A Levels becoming much heavier and more time consuming. Anyway I'm at the point now where my exams are in 6 weeks and I have literally no time to do anything except revise. Taking the time out to write this post, I still have revision in the back of my mind, however I've been so consumed by guilt over my inactivity on this blog both for the reader and the publishers that I felt I needed to take the time out to write this post and at least explain to you why. Henceforth for the next 6-10 weeks, unfortunately, this blog will continue in this horrible state of inactivity - HOWEVER, as soon as my exams are over I promise to god, I'm going to post so much on here you won't know whats hit you. By no means do I want to call quits and once exams are over I will be reading everything and posting so much on here. In the mean time I'll try to maybe get some stuff up but if I don't I'm really sorry and I hope you guys understand. I feel really bad guys, but I'll be back soon!!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6352350956849097927.post-7343728350437271192015-01-16T11:00:00.000+00:002015-01-16T11:00:01.522+00:00THE MIME ORDER - BLOG TOUR - MUSICSo guys this is the final part of my Mime Order blog tour and after reading the book, I decided for my final post I wanted make almost like a playlist for the book with some music that I really felt suited the story, the world and the relationships, so without further ado here are my choices.

Hearts Without Chains - Ellie Goulding

I picked this because not only does it have a slow and slightly haunting feel to it but it also has this rough yet soft and tender side to it and just listening to the lyrics I feel like they sum up Paige and her situation in a whole song, and I feel there is no better representation for her than this song.

Everybody's Watching Me - The Neighbourhood

This song, I felt fitted, because it's about always being watched by so many people and feeling like you need to get away and hide, and for Paige that is this book. Also the song has very rough and dark vibes that match the slightly darker tone to this book.

A World Alone - Lorde

I picked this, because whilst it doesn't describe the whole setting in this book, I feel like it describes Paige's personal world or feeling alone and being in constant fear, whilst still getting those rare and scarce free breathless moments.

I know places - Taylor Swift

I picked this one because I feel like the lyrics and song sum up the relationship between Warden And Paige. It's this forbidden relationship, that once people find out there will be people ready to hunt them. Also how they only get brief moments with each other but when they do they're always in moments of fear or chaos. I think the vibe and tone of the song is also kind of dark and hypnotic, basically like Warden and Paige!

Sorry there's no video of this song because youtube won't allow it due to copyright.

Animals - Maroon 5

I think this song is perfect for Paige's situation of being on the run and being hunted by so many people. The lyrics represent her having to hide and run and yet still have so many eyes on her at the same and only being able to find a little solstice in Warden.

So there you have it!! They are my five songs that I've picked so I hope you like them and comment on whether you agree or disagree that they fit the story!?

Also I finally want to give a massive thank you to bloomsbury for letting me be a part of this amazing blog tour and a part of the release for the Mime Order!!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6352350956849097927.post-19734858844717895422015-01-16T10:00:00.000+00:002015-01-16T10:00:00.455+00:00THE MIME ORDER - SAMANTHA SHANNON - REVIEW

Book: The Mime Order
Author: Samantha Shannon
Publisher: Bloomsbury
ISBN:
Rating: 10/10

Paige Mahoney has escaped the brutal penal colony of Sheol I, but her problems have only just begun: many of the fugitives are still missing and she is the most wanted person in London. As Scion turns its all-seeing eye on Paige, the mime-lords and mime-queens of the city's gangs are invited to a rare meeting of the Unnatural Assembly. Jaxon Hall and his Seven Seals prepare to take centre stage, but there are bitter fault lines running through the clairvoyant community and dark secrets around every corner. Then the Rephaim begin crawling out from the shadows. But where is Warden? Paige must keep moving, from Seven Dials to Grub Street to the secret catacombs of Camden, until the fate of the underworld can be decided. Will Paige know who to trust? The hunt for the dreamwalker is on.

Breathless. That's how I felt after finishing this book. A year I waited for this book and for something I waited so long for, I finished so quick and now I'm waiting for the next one... already.
But seriously, The Mime Order utterly blew me away. Phenomenal doesn't even begin to describe it.

The story. Whilst I knew vaguely where the story would go after the massive cliffhanger that was 'the Bone Season' I had no idea it would go the way it did. This story and world is already so unique and special, as it is, and Shannon has succeeded in penning another riveting and twist filled plot that will keep you up till the dead of night, turning the pages until there none left to turn.
I love how we saw the story progress through this novel and how we followed Paige as she travelled through London as well as being on the run from everyone. No joke, everyone is after Paige (she doesn't really catch a break in this book) and that's why this is just such an insane, action packed book, that I just couldn't put down.
The story, I found, flowed, well. It was never slow in any way, but the further you read the more the pace picked up and the more riveting it became, to the point where I was locked to it and could not put the book down. Shannon has masterfully created this plot and whilst it gave me everything I wanted it left me wanting so much more. (I know this is kinda vague around the plot but I really don't want to give anything away guys, you really have to read this is experience how perfect this book is)

The setting. It was really interesting to see London through Paige's eyes, but in a different way to how she saw it in book 1. In book 1 it was very much a place hide from but now it's her place to hide within, and I loved seeing how she moved around London with all these secret places that only she knew about. Needless to say, I just loved seeing this fantasy ridden London (in the future) and even though I've been to London so many times, I didn't even need to use those images to engross myself because Shannon's writing was so fluid and rich that it just built up the new London so vividly in my mind.
Also, this is a personal thing, but I feel like this story and novel just wouldn't have worked or had the same effect had it been set elsewhere and London and Oxford really were and are the perfect settings for this book and Shannon makes them work beautifully with the story.

Now onto the writing. Shannon's writing wowed from book one and it's done nothing but get better with book 2. The writing has only become more seamless and a pleasure to read. Words flowed easily, building up worlds and characters in my mind with ease. The way Shannon used words to craft this world is on a whole new level of amazing and from page one I slipped into this story, and lived it first hand through this articulate and beautiful prose.

The characters in this were even better than last time. Not only did we get to delve deeper into their mind and not only see them in a different light, responsive to different situations, but we also got to know them and their history better, allowing us to understand them better and their place within the story. However, the two I want to focus on are Paige and Warden, first separately, then together.
Paige, as a character, grew so much in this book and I loved watching it. Even though, really, she's always been on her own, she becomes alone properly for the very first time and we see her come into her own, take control of her life and somehow just about manage to keep it together in the middle of the biggest mess ever. Seeing her develop in this book was exactly what I wanted because now she's a stronger and better character and I can't wait to see her take on everyone in the next book (hopefully).
Now to Paige and Warden. Although Warden isn't in this novel straight away (he comes back about halfway through), the chemistry and electricity between these two characters is off the charts. They're literally the perfect couple together and Shannon has made it this way, so that you can't help but love them together, which also worries me that she's made us love them as a couple so she can do something devastating, however until that happens I can't wait to see them together in the next book.
That's another great point to the book; whilst there is romance and it does have a key role it doesn't ever overwhelm or take over the book, nor does Paige let it become the most important thing in her life. The book still stays strongly focused on the main storyline and Paige says focused on herself and what she needs to.

So overall I can say I am not disappointed at all with this book; It's everything I wanted and more. Whilst it's still a complete mess everything came together in a satisfying way, that's left me needing the next book now. All the aspects of this book have tied together to create a masterpiece, and quite honestly this book is dripping with perfection.
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E. Schwab

Grey London is dirty, boring, lacks magic, ruled by mad King George. Red London is where life and magic are revered, and the Maresh Dynasty presides over a flourishing empire. White London is ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. People fight to control magic, and the magic fights back, draining the city to its very bones. Once there was Black London - but no one speaks of that now.Officially, Kell is the Red Traveler, personal ambassador and adopted Prince of Red London, carrying the monthly correspondences between royals of each London. Unofficially, Kell smuggles for those willing to pay for even a glimpse of a world they’ll never see. This dangerous hobby sets him up for accidental treason. Fleeing into Grey London, Kell runs afoul of Delilah Bard, a cut-purse with lofty aspirations. She robs him, saves him from a dangerous enemy, then forces him to another world for her 'proper adventure'.But perilous magic is afoot, and treachery lurks at every turn. To save all of the worlds, Kell and Lila will first need to stay alive — trickier than they hoped.
And her attention isn’t the only one caught: someone has been murdering Downworlders as well. The Fair Folk make a deal with the Institute: if the Blackthorns and Emma will investigate the killings, they’ll return Mark Blackthorn to his home. The catch: they have only two weeks to find the killers. Otherwise it’s open war between faeries and Nephilim. The Shadowhunters of the Institute must race against time to catch the killers, even as they begin to suspect the involvement of those closest to them. At the same time, Emma is falling in love with the one person in the world she’s absolutely forbidden by Shadowhunter Law to love. Set against the glittering backdrop of present-day Los Angeles, Emma must learn to trust her head and her heart as she investigates a demonic plot that stretches from the warlock-run nightclubs of the Sunset Strip to the enchanted sea that pounds the beaches of Santa Monica.
The Darkest Part of the Forest by Holly Black

Children can have a cruel, absolute sense of justice. Children can kill a monster and feel quite proud of themselves. A girl can look at her brother and believe they’re destined to be a knight and a bard who battle evil. She can believe she’s found the thing she’s been made for.Hazel lives with her brother, Ben, in the strange town of Fairfold where humans and fae exist side by side. The faeries’ seemingly harmless magic attracts tourists, but Hazel knows how dangerous they can be, and she knows how to stop them. Or she did, once.At the center of it all, there is a glass coffin in the woods. It rests right on the ground and in it sleeps a boy with horns on his head and ears as pointed as knives. Hazel and Ben were both in love with him as children. The boy has slept there for generations, never waking.Until one day, he does…As the world turns upside down, Hazel tries to remember her years pretending to be a knight. But swept up in new love, shifting loyalties, and the fresh sting of betrayal, will it be enough?
All I know now by Carrie Hope Fletcher

We all know that growing up is hard to do, and sometimes the only thing that makes it better are the reassuring words of someone who has walked that bumpy road just a few steps ahead of you and somehow ended up as a fully-functioning adult. Carrie Hope Fletcher is that person.* Thanks to her phenomenally popular YouTube videos, Carrie has become an 'honorary big sister' to hundreds of thousands of young people who turn to her for advice, friendship and, most of all, the knowledge that things will get better.Carrie has created a safe and positive space for young people to connect and share their hopes and concerns online, and now she will share her most personal thoughts and experiences in her first book, ALL I KNOW NOW. Part memoir, part advice guide, it will include Carrie's thoughts on some of the topics she's asked about most regularly: bullying, body image, relationships and perhaps the scariest question of all: what does the future hold for me? With warmth, wit and a sprinkling of hard-won wisdom, Carrie will provide the essential tools for growing up gracefully . . . most of the time.*Although she did recently post a video about how to pee in a onesie. So the definition of 'adult' is a bit flexible here . . .
Magnus Chase and the Sword of Summer by Rick Riordan

Magnus Chase has always been a troubled kid. Hello everyone!! Today I have something very exciting to share with you!! Today I am hosting the blog tour for Trial by Fire by Josephine Angelini, and I feel so privileged to be a part of this because this actually such an incredible book (you can see me rave about it in my review, the link will be at the bottom).

So anyway for todays blog tour Josie will be talking about her playlist for Trial by Fire, about the sort of music she listened to when writing it and that she associates with it and I loved reading it because it was incredibly interesting and really gave me more depth to the book. Plus she has great music taste so without further ado here is Josie's post!
Book: Trial by Fire
Author: Josephine Angelini
Publisher: Macmillan Children's
ISBN: 9781447260820
Rating: 9/10

Love burns. Worlds collide. Magic reigns. This world is trying to kill Lily Proctor. Her life-threatening allergies keep her from enjoying many of the experiences that other teenagers take for granted...which is why she is determined to enjoy her first (and perhaps only) high-school party. But Lily's life never goes according to plan, and after a humiliating incident in front of half her graduating class Lily wishes she could just disappear. Suddenly Lily is in a different Salem - one overrun with horrifying creatures and ruled by powerful women called Crucibles. Strongest and cruellest of all the Crucibles is Lillian ...Lily's identical other self in this alternate universe. This new version of her world is terrifyingly sensual, and Lily is soon overwhelmed by new experiences. Lily realizes that what makes her weak at home is exactly what makes her extraordinary in New Salem. It also puts her life in danger. Thrown into a world she doesn't understand, Lily is torn between responsibilities she can't hope to shoulder alone, and a love she never expected. But how can Lily be the saviour of this world when she is literally her own worst enemy?

Josephine Angelini is a genius. Literally I didn't even care what the book was about, I saw her name and I wanted this book for review because I had no doubts that it would be amazing. I was correct. This book was so much more than amazing. It was flawlessly good and I'm going to get onto why that it in a moment.

The book follows Lily, this crazy sick girl who's allergic to just about everything and is in love with her only friend who is male and the biggest player in town. Anyway, cut to the chase, she gets rejected and find herself in a parallel world where she discovers she is a crucible which is kind of like a witch. Oh and theres another version of her that wants her and she essentially has to fight herself. It's sounds a bit scattered but trust me it's not, its just that so much happens in this book and I don't want to give anything away at all, because It's something you definitely need to experience without knowing anything before hand.

Now for the plot. Angelini had this flawless way of seamlessly combing modern or older classics with modern days world to weave these incredible hybrid stories that I absolutely love. It's just such a clever and unique way of doing things and Trial by Fire stands out for all the right reasons.
I guess you could say it loosely based of the crucible by Arthur Miller (A play which I so happen to Love) and it made reading this so interesting and it was because whilst the plot was leading the vague path that I sort of knew I still wasn't sure where I was going and it was absolutely brilliant. It never got confusing or complicated and bearing in mind it was a topic that could've gotten extremely confusing Angelini seemed to master if easily, building this incurable world and system with precision.
Another thing I loved about this novel, that also made it different to other 'witch' novels was the science which actually really intrigued me. Basically all the magic and supernatural powers in this were not so supernatural. All the magic they did actually used science as a basis because the magic was essentially science, hence why these witches are called crucibles. It was so clever and different and I instantly fell in love with this idea of science and magic working together and for me it made it all seem a bit real and a breather of something unique in a genera so full of the same stuff.
A further bonus is that it had so many hidden references to the Crucible that you wouldn't get had you not read the original play, however I have and did pick up on these and loved them, seeing instantly how they related down to the classic.

What can I say about Angelini's writing. As you can tell from my reviews of the Starcrossed trilogy I adore Angelini's style of writing. I find it really poetic and beautiful and quite simply, utterly gorgeous. I really feel like her writing has developed somewhat, because although I could tell it was written by Angelini the writing seemed more developed and grown, like everything that was already amazing had been fine-tuned to perfection. The perfect balance of description and action, the perfect pacing to make it flow beautifully, the precise and well times twists and turns that left you hungry for more. No this book left you burning for more.

The setting for this is really interesting actually, and I think it only helped to show off another of Angelini's skills which is that she can incredibly world build and create these stunning, beautiful and different worlds that you fall in love and struggle to leave. The setting is basically a world or dimension sitting on top of ours, where both science and magic exists, neither one without the other but magic dominates and the running of society and what powers our world is completely different yet so similar. I really did like is world and they way Angelini crafted it made it all the more spectacular. Her dreamy and whimsical descriptions saw this exquisite world crafted in my mind. The world she built actually complimented the story so well that whilst i was reading it I literally forgot the real world and escaped to, I guess we can call it 'New Salem'.

As for characters in this Angelini kept it nice and simple with only a few select characters that never really changed. I liked this for a number of reason which I will elaborate on. With this being the first in a series it didn't bombard us with too much info or characters and allowed us to understand and stay comfortable in the book, getting to know and understand the few characters we knew really well. We learnt a fair amount about each characters past and Angelini really blurred the lines between who we hated and didn't in this novel, especially with the love triangle, though it seemed to tilt more in one direction. Needless to say we knew who the main villains were and who we really hated but as i said, a fair amount it still unclear, but i have no doubt this will be cleared up and the following novels in the series as this is only book 1.

Overall I'm in love with this book. Trial by Fire is a masterpiece. the ideas are so unique and so easy to fall in love with and once your in your left with a burning desire to turn the page, and keep on reading. I and no doubts in Angelini's ability to wow and intrigue me and she has succeeded once again in this beautiful rendition of science, witches and the Crucible. The wait for the sequel is a wait too long because i genuinely can not wait to meet Lily and the gang to see where they've been led, because that was one hell of a cliff-hanger at the end and there no way I can sit back and reminisce about the book with an ending like that. I need to know what happens next.
But to conclude Angelini has impressed yet again. Trial by Fire is a sharp, clever beautiful story that will keep you up till the depths of night trying to see what happens next.

Okay why do I want this book? I'm sorry if it isn't clear, blatantly obvious but if I must spell it out here are my reason:
#1: Cassandra Clare
#2: Holly Black
#3: CASSANDRA FREAKING CLARE

So I am a massive fan of Cassandra Clare, like both TMI and TIF are up there in my favourite series list and then, what's that you say, a new book by Cassandra Clare, about Magicians and adventures and A FREAKING GORGEOUS COVER. Like if I'm honest the cover and story don't even matter, I'm pretty sure I'd read anything with Cassandra Clare plastered on the front so that's a fraction of why I want to read this.
But then guess what. Not only is it Cassies' book but its also written by Holly Black.
OH. MY. FRAKING. GOD.
Are you serious. Holly Black is an insane writer and she's just gone and written a book with Cassie. I don't think a book could be any more perfect, and I genuinely can not wait for this. I can not.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6352350956849097927.post-71176406861996659082014-06-30T10:17:00.000+01:002014-06-30T10:17:26.536+01:00HELLO WORLDOkay, Hi everyone! I know it's been a while and I have very MIA recently but I have a very good reason. Over the past few months I have had my finals, or exams or whatever they called in every country, regardless to say, they're majorly important and all my time and energy was focused on them meaning I couldn't post and the blog suffered.

However.

I HAVE FINISHED THEM!! WOOOO! Yes they're all done now, meaning I have 12 weeks of holiday and plenty of time to read and review and blog and all sorts, so needless to say I'm back and ready to blog!!! I've missed it loads and now I'm here I'm my comfy chair, whirring away at reviews that I've been waiting so long to write and you'll be able to read them very very soon!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6352350956849097927.post-91250923724550268982014-04-04T09:00:00.000+01:002014-04-04T09:00:00.117+01:00DARREN SHAN - INTERVIEW - ZOM-B MISSION BLOG TOURHello everyone! So I know I've been a little MIA recently but I have exams at the moment and exams equals revision which doesn't leave me much time to post.

Anyway today I have something very awesome to share with you! To celebrate the release of the next instalment in Darren Shan's amazing Zom-B series; Zom-b Mission, I have an mega cool interview to share! In fact a couple of years ago I have the pleasure of meeting Darren so being able to do this interview to celebrate this new book was actually really fun and exciting for me!

Moving on, I don't want to keep you waiting so without further ado, here is the interview!

1. What was you inspiration behind this series?
I wanted to write about racism and the abuse of power in the early 21st century, but I wanted to come
at it in a roundabout way, not write it as a straight-up issues book. I felt I might reach more readers if I made the issues part of a wider, thrilling, exciting, horrifc storyline, rather than focus on them exclusively. Zombies seemed like a good way to do that -- George A Romero's zombie films explored racist issues long before I hit the scene, so the precedent was already there -- so off I set.

2. Are any of the characters based on people you know?
Well, lots of them are named after people I know. I've done that in other books in the past, but more than usual in this novel, since it's got more of a contemporary urban feel than my other works, and "real" names suited the story more than they suited the stories of my previous work. But in terms of basing the characters on real people, no, not so much. Which is a relief, given how twisted and vicious the characters in these books are!

3. Do you have a writing ritual?
I tend to write about ten pages (3,000) words a day when I'm doing a first draft. I'll write five pages in the morning, take a break for lunch, edit them after lunch, then write another five. Continue until finished. I'll then give myself a break of a few months, before returning to do a rewrite, and I take further breaks between each subsequent edit. In total, I'll usually spend between two and three years working on any one book, although I'll juggle a lot of different books around over that period, which is how I can release books so quickly.

4. What is your most embarrassing moment as a Writer?
I was at an event once where a fan asked me about a certain character. I didn't recognise the name, and told the fan that I thought she was thinking of a book by a different writer. But no, she calmly reminded me of where the character appeared, and I finally recalled him! Luckily I'm not precious about these things, and I had a good laugh at my own expense.

5. When did you know you wanted to write?
Since I was five or six years of age. There were lots of others things I wanted to be too (vet, rock star, footballer, astronaut), but being a writer was top of the list, and also a lot more achievable for me than my other goals, since I was actually good at writing.

6. Who is your favourite author and what is your favourite book?
Stephen King is my favourite author, and has been for about thirty years, since I read my first book by him. My favourite book as a child was The Secret Garden, by Frances Hodgson Burnett.

7. What is the book you wish you had written?
I don't have a desire to write any books that are already written. There are amazing, groundbreaking books that I admire the hell out of -- for example, Lord of the Rings, and the graphic novel Watchmen -- but they were the work of other creative minds, and I only focus on what I can produce myself.

8. How does it feel to see your book in bookshops?
Nice, though not as mind-blowing as I think many people imagine. It's not like winning the lottery and walking around in a happy daze. A published book is the result of months and years of hard graft. By the time it appears on a bookshelf, I've gone through so many different stages that it's something of an anticlimax.

9. Can you give us any info of what you're working on next / what your next project is?
There are several more Zom-B books to come (there will be twelve in total) so I'm finishing off those at the moment. I have also completed a first draft of what I hope will be my next book after that, but I can't say anything about it yet, as it's still very much in its infancy.

10. And finally a fun question! If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
Stephen King, William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens. I'm sure I'd get some good stories out of those three over the course of a meal.

So as you can see that was a fantastic interview and if you haven't already read the Zom-B books you should definitely check them out. Here are the links for:
Book: Banished
Author: Liz De Jager
Publisher: Tor
ISBN: 9781447247654
Rating: A

Kit is proud to be a Blackhart, now she's living with her unorthodox cousins and sharing their strange lives. Especially since their home-schooling includes spells, fighting enemy fae and using ancient weapons. But it's not until she rescues a rather handsome fae prince, fighting for his life on the edge of Blackhart Manor, that her training really kicks in. With her family away on various missions, Kit must protect Prince Thorn, rely on new friends and use her own unfamiliar magic to stay ahead of Thorn's enemies. As things go from bad to apocalyptic, fae battle fae in a war that threatens to spill into the human world. Then Kit pits herself against the Elder Gods themselves - it's that or lose everyone she's learnt to love.

So I got a proof of this way back but I thought I'd hold of reviewing it till it was out and Voila! It is, so you should go and buy it! But seriously It's an amazing book. Now I'm not just saying that because I've met the author but I really mean it. It's honestly like nothing you'll ever read before.

I'm not sure how to describe. If you took maybe the mortal interments, lord of the rings and then just throw in some modern YA Paranormal fiction with a bucket of romance and feels I guess you'd get this. There is nothing like this out there on the market and it's such a new and great idea I couldn't help but fall in love with it from page 1.

I loved the story idea. The plot it so intricate and beautiful and the novel just has so much packed into it. There wasn't a page that went by in which nothing happened. There was always some action of mystery to keep the pages turning and you on the edge of your seat.
The books follows Kit Blackheart who belongs to a family of demon fighting, prince saving superhero (to put it lightly). Anyway she saves a prince, gets attacked by tons of monsters and get drawn into a insanely awesome story.
I had no issues following the story but I loved how it was complex enough to keep me guessing and to never give too much away.

The setting in this never stayed the same for too much because they were always on the move but one thing I did love is seeing how so many of the normal places in England were warped into these ulterior magical places.

The writing was extremely good. I'm a lover of descriptive prose and this book did it for me. Liz De Jager ha a way with words, building up these magical locations and characters to the utmost detail. Her writing made worlds appear in my head and I absolutely loved it.
Also the way she handled and the characters and emotions in her writing was perfection. It was consistent, strong and I couldn't held but adore it.

The characters in this book were a pleasure to read about. Each had a distinct voice, though it was from Kit's POV, and you instantly knew who you liked and didn't. All the characters had good foundations and Jager delved back into their histories to give you a better understanding of each character and this made them more real and human.
What I loved was how she led you to believe that certain characters were certain people when in fact they're not at all and she has mastered the art of twist and turns because this book had shocked and surprised on so many occasions.

Overall I absolutely adored this novel down to the very last pages. It had me up till the darkest hours of night so I could find out what happened next and I will be recommending this to all my friends because it was absolutely totally fabulous.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6352350956849097927.post-80477545687603102582014-02-18T17:51:00.002+00:002014-02-18T17:51:53.790+00:00THE HOUSE OF HADES - RICK RIORDAN - REVIEW

Book: Hero's of Olympus: The House of Hades
Author: Rick Riordan
Publisher: Puffin
ISBN: 9780141339184
Rating: A

The House of Hades is the fourth book in the bestselling Heroes of Olympus series, set in the action-packed world of Percy Jackson. The stakes have never been higher. If Percy Jackson and Annabeth fail in their quest, there'll be hell on Earth. Literally. Wandering the deadly realm of Tartarus, every step leads them further into danger. And, if by some miracle they do make it to the Doors of Death, there's a legion of bloodthirsty monsters waiting for them. Meanwhile, Hazel and the crew of the Argo II have a choice: to stop a war or save their friends. Whichever road they take one thing is certain - in the Underworld, evil is inescapable

This review is insanely late and I must apologise for that but stuff came up that I had to deal with, but as I said, uber sorry for the delay.

Where to start with this. I feel like I'm repeating myself in the reviews for this series but I honest to god adore every single book in it and House of Hades tops it off. As per usual Riordan has wowed me once again, providing a stunning addition to this magical and wonderful series. There are really no words to describe how fantastic this novel is.

So this book picks up where Book 3 left off, and actually is set in two places. We followed one set of the seven on above land as they traveled to the doors and we followed Percy down in Hades, which by far was one of my favourite settings. Hades, being a unreal place, was so open to interpretation and I was raring to see what Riordan would do with it and I absolutely loved it. He built this fantastic new world or dimension and It just felt so real and flawless.

The storyline essentially follows Percy's quest to save Annabeth and the rest of the Groups quest to open and then close the doors for him in the real world... with a fair few twists and turns, of course. The story in this was 100% Riordan and everything I wanted from this. Once again it was crammed with hilarity, actions and tons of magic. Whilst being a clever and complex plot I didn't find it complicated or hard to follow and most importantly it was one of the most enjoyable reads I have read in a long time!

The writing as usual consisted of Riordan's fast paced, action packed laugh out loud prose that had been sweating, smiling and laughing at all the right moments. It flowed so well and I loved the way his description built up and brought to life these wonderful myths that we all read and dream about. I don't think he's actually written anything bad because all he ever does is amaze.

The characters in this are pretty much the same. What really happened was Riordan built much more on the charters delving more into their roots and in particular their secrets (Hint Hint, Nico). The voices came across loud and clear and what I loved was that when writing in different POV's I didn't have to keep checking who's POV it was. Riordans style for each characters is so well crafted and identifiable It was such a pleasure to read.

Overall I'm not surprised at how amazing this book is for the pure reason I wouldn't expect anything less from Riordan. He's done it again and I'm uber excited for Blood of Olympus yet super sad to see Percy's journeys finally end, but I know it'll be a good one.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6352350956849097927.post-16920741921520631372013-08-16T17:56:00.001+01:002013-08-16T17:56:38.637+01:00ELEGY - TARA HUDSON - REVIEW

Book: Elegy
Author: Tara Hudson
Publisher: HarperCollins Childrens
ISBN: 9780007437290
Rating: B

A stranded spirit, and a love story that crosses the divide between the living and the dead...Despite everything she's lost in the last few months, Amelia's new half-life feels something like a victory. That is, until the demons of High Bridge make their ultimate move: rising from Hell and killing Wilburton's residents, one by one, to get to Amelia. When the death toll reaches too close to home, Amelia must make a horrible choice. Does she rely on the help of Joshua and his friends, or does she sacrifice herself...for the final time?

Elegy. Hmmm... Although in the end this was good I feel like this series has gone downwards, not up. Needless to say I did like book 3 and I'm going to go over everything that there really is to talk about.

So book three is the final book in the series and Amelia and Josh and Jillian yet face the same problem again. The dark still wants here, Jillian and Josh are in danger again and she must save the day. It was different from the other book yet still a little samey and although I didn't mind that one thing that did bug me is the fact Amelia doesn't learn from her mistakes but that's not really a fault with the book, come to think of it. That's just her character.

Anyway the book starts of promising and naturally this is the final book so it's all about final showdowns and it was really captivating. Hudson has definitely, within this series, shown her talent to be able to write many different genres well and the story line worked for me. I liked it, and it kept me guessing. It never got confusing or repeated itself but the amount of deaths and if I may add, unessacery deaths were overwhelming in this and sometimes I think you need to draw a line.

The setting in this shifted back to both Amelias and Joshua's hometown and it made sense, as the main plot line was focused around high bridge and bringing it down. I liked the fact that we went back to old places because it really helped us to understand the stories and the emotion behind all of the happenings and understand the light and dark better, in general.

The characters pretty much stayed the same in this which was nice. With the increase of characters in book 2 we were so busy getting know them there was no space to develop or uncovers true colours of other characters. Because the characters were pretty much the same in this we started to see peoples true colours and what they were really like. In fact we got a much better glimpse into the both Joshua and Amelia's past but more Amelia. I felt like this was really good and whilst other characters did come into play it was primarily based back onto Amelia, Josh and Jillian like in book 1 which leas back to my point of growing our knowledge bases on the characters so we ca really connect with them.

As usual Hudson's writing was a dream to read. Description flowed as did the story but what really stuck out to me was her world building. In this book there was a lot more of inter world interaction and they way she used words to craft these worlds in my mind was just perfection. I loved the way she formed the rooms of hell in high bridge and I would've loved to see more of the light worlds but from what she wrote I fell in love with the different places. Hudson had a knack for description, especially with places.

Overall this was the perfect end to this series. Well the ending, I'm not sure if that's how I would have done it, but however it was a beautiful and magical ending and this series had left me speechless. I'll definitely be coming back to it in the future.

Book: Arise
Author: Tara Hudson
Publisher: HarperCollins Childrens
ISBN: 9780007437276
Rating: A

A stranded spirit, and a love story that crosses the divide between the living and the dead...In this hauntingly lovely sequel to HEREAFTER, Amelia - still trapped somewhere between life and death - continues to fight for her relationship with her mortal love, Joshua. Looking for answers, they visit some of Joshua's relatives in New Orleans. But even in a city so famously steeped in the supernatural, Amelia just ends up with more questions...and becomes increasingly convinced that she and Joshua can never have a future together. Then Amelia meets other spirits in-between and begins to seriously consider joining them. Caught between two worlds, Amelia must choose carefully, before the evil spirits of the nether world can choose for her.

So I've been sitting on this review for a while now and I've come to the conclusion that I'm not sure how I feel about this. It was good overall but I guess it just wasn't as good as book 1 and some parts dragged. That's all. Aside from those two points I really did like this book and I definitely captivated me.

I'm gonna start off by talking about the setting. This was primarily set in New Orleans and New Orleans is somewhat of a sticky subject for me. Apart from interview with a vampire new orleans has always disappointed me with literature and sometimes it can be taken a bit too far but I was willing to see what hudson would do with it and she nailed it. Maybe it was her descriptive text but I saw New Orleans in a whole new light and I can honestly say it provided the perfect location for Arise.

The story had a killer storyline. So much happened in this novel and so much of it was so interesting I could barely peel my eyes away. And the twists and turns in this were relentless! The shocks and surprises were amazing and I felt like this could quite easily fit into the mystery genre as well. With hidden secrets etc this really was like a jigsaw puzzle that slowly fitted together throughout the series and I loved it so much.
I also loved the introduction of Voodoo as it's not something you see loads off in YA fiction. I loved the new realm and exposure to the magic and it definitely helped the reader to understand the ins and outs of being a ghost and what and how it meant. Of course this was briefly touched on in book1 but Arise gave a better understanding that to Gabi.
As I mentioned above in some place this novel did drag a little but with a little perseverance you'll definitely get to a better parts that will throughly entertain you.

The characters in this one definitely expanded as a whole group of Joshua's family were introduced and a hidden villain. I felt like we didn't get to know Josh, Jill or Amelia any better than before because we were being introduced to all these new characters so there wasn't really any space or time for that but I really did enjoy have the new characters to spice this book up because otherwise it would have been a tad mundane. Also Josh and Amelia have fairly similar personalities so having the extra people really brought the book together and to life.

The writing, as ever, was beautiful and Hudson's descriptive style of prose really made this novel spectacular, building this incredible vision of New Orleans in my mind and the overall effect was just stunning! I'm not going to comment too much on the writing because very rarely does the quality/ style of writing change between books in a series and it didn't really change in this.

Overall I really did like this. Yes there were some bumps in the road but overall it definitely satisfied me as the second book in the series and my review for book 3 will be up shortly.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6352350956849097927.post-7123251506147085312013-08-14T16:18:00.000+01:002013-08-14T16:18:38.576+01:00ELIZABETH LABAN - INTERVIEW

1. What was you inspiration behind the novel?

I have always loved young adult books, and really wanted to write one. When I was
in high school, I wrote a tragedy paper about Greek and Shakespearean tragedy that always
stuck with me. A few years ago, my agent Uwe Stender suggested I read Johann Wolfgang von
Goethe’s The Sorrows of Young Werter. I loved the story, and especially the structure of the
story. I started playing around with ways to modernize and retell it. Being one of the classic
tragedies, it sparked my memory of the paper I wrote in high school, which, in turn, brought
back that whole world for me. It all started coming together in my mind and The Tragedy Paper
was born.

2. Are any of the characters based on people you know?

Mr. Simon is most definitely based on my high school English teacher Mr. Arthur
Naething. He is the one who assigned me the Tragedy Paper. At the time, I had no idea that
the impact that assignment would have on me would be so huge. The way I remember it, Mr.
Naething really
was obsessed with words like magnitude and hubris. He really did dismiss us
each day by saying, “Go forth and spread beauty and light.” There are some differences, of
course, between Mr. Simon and Mr. Naething. Mr. Simon is a much younger man than Mr.
Naething was when he taught me. Also, Mr. Simon is harsher in some ways. When he keeps the
late students out of the room, for example, that is all him. Mr. Naething never did anything like
that. As for the other characters in The Tragedy Paper, they are completely made up.

3. Do you have a writing ritual?

I really don’t have a writing ritual. I am not one of those authors who writes for a certain
amount of time each day. I write whenever I can. Sometimes that means I have hours, sometimes
only minutes. Also, I can go days without writing. I do usually write at the same place in my
house though – at the dining room table.

4. What is your most embarrassing moment as a Writer?

My theory about “most embarrassing moment” questions is that nobody ever really tells
the truth since it would be too embarrassing. If you asked me my most embarrassing moment as
a teenager, I would have to make one up. But I will tell you this. At one point a few months after
my book was published, my editor wrote to tell me that a very well-known author’s agent had
read my book and liked it a lot. The author she represents is one of my absolute favorites, so I
saw her name and didn’t read the rest of the email carefully. I thought my editor was telling me
the author had read it and liked it a lot. I went crazy! I wrote back an over-the-top email to my
editor, telling her this was a dream come true, it was more than I ever could have hoped for, and
asking if I could tweet about it. I few minutes later, I got another email asking if I had
misunderstood what she had said. That’s when I went back and read the first email more
carefully. I was so embarrassed! Don’t get me wrong, I was thrilled that the agent liked it. But it
would have been an even greater thrill if the author had read it, too. Most important, I wish I had
just calmed down for a minute before reacting.

5. When did you know you wanted to write?

I can honestly say that I have always wanted to be a writer – at least since I could hold a
pen or pencil (or crayon). As a kid, I was constantly composing stories and poems. I focused on
writing in college, and then went to journalism school. I have said this before, but it was reading
S. E. Hinton’s books that really gave me the writing bug. I remember being in middle school and
finishing That Was Then, This Is Now and thinking that more than anything I wanted to one day
create a world that touched people the way I was touched by that book. Having said that, I should
point out that it was thirty years later that The Tragedy Paper was published!

6. Who is your favourite author and what is your favourite book?

This is a hard question – and I will say it is constantly changing. There is no way I can
name just one favorite author and one favorite book. This month, for example, I bought two new
books by favorite authors just because they wrote them – Liane Moriarty and Curtis Sittenfeld. I
loved What Alice Forgot by Moriarty and it is at the top of my list of favorite books. I loved
David Payne’s Early From The Dance. I will also add Scott Spencer’s Waking The Dead,
Sittenfeld’s American Wife, Jane Smiley’s A Thousand Acres, John Green’s Looking For Alaska,
Jennifer Weiner’s Good In Bed, William Goldman’s The Princess Bride and Jane Schwartz’s
Ruffian: Burning From The Start.

7. What is the book you wish you had written?

This is a tough one. Can I say John Green’s The Fault in our Stars? Doesn’t everyone
wish they had written that book? Or Wonder, by R.J. Palacio. That is one of those books that you
read and then find yourself thinking about at different times. It gets inside you and never leaves –
which is a really good thing because it is such an amazing story.

8. How does it feel to see your book in bookshops?

I love it! I hope I will never, ever get tired of it or used to it. Tonight, for example, my
family and I are traveling and we went into a Barnes & Noble near our hotel. They had a stack of
my books, and it was a thrill to see where they were displayed, and then introduce myself to one
of the booksellers there.

9. Can you give us any info of what you're working on next / what your next project is?

Yes! I am working on another young adult book, not at all connected to The Tragedy
Paper. This time the main character is a girl. I would say its biggest defining characteristic is that
it’s a mystery.

10. And finally a fun question! If you could have dinner with any three people, dead or alive,
who would they be and why?

Again, my answers would change depending on what’s going on with me or what I’ve
been reading or watching. I would say Barrack Obama is at the top – I would love to sit down
and talk to him, maybe meet his family. Next I would say an actor who worked on Friday Night
Lights – we just binge watched the entire series, finishing last night, and it is all we can talk
about! I would invite Kyle Chandler or Zach Gilford over for dinner and make some BBQ, ask
them what it was like to work on such an amazing show. And finally, I would have to say S.E.
Hinton because she had such a huge impact on me with her books. I see her on Twitter, and love
reading what she has to say. But it would be pretty cool to sit down with her and get to know her
a little.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6352350956849097927.post-49803453636918490022013-08-11T20:08:00.000+01:002013-08-12T20:08:41.218+01:00LETTERBOX LOVE #4
